Does My Hair Need Protein or Moisture?

Dry hair and weak hair both feel bad, break easily and look dull, which is why so many people spend months treating one while suffering from the other. Telling them apart takes about thirty seconds with a wet strand, and getting it right is the difference between a routine that works and one that quietly makes things worse.

The quick test

Take a shed strand, wet it, and pull gently from both ends. If it stretches a long way and stays stretched, feeling soft and gummy, the structure is weak and it needs protein. If it snaps almost immediately with barely any give, it is dry and needs moisture. If it stretches a little and springs back, it is balanced and needs neither, which is a real answer and the one people most often ignore.

What a moisture problem looks like

Hair that feels rough or crispy, particularly at the ends. Frizz that appears no matter what you do. Curls that will not clump or hold definition. Hair that feels thirsty, drinks up product and is dry again by the afternoon. Breakage that produces short, dry-looking pieces. It is more common than a protein problem in textured hair, because the shape of the strand works against moisture reaching the ends.

What a protein problem looks like

Hair that feels limp, mushy or overly soft, especially when wet. Strands that stretch like elastic and do not recover. Hair that looks flat and lifeless however much volume product you use. A curl pattern that has gone slack and undefined without being dry. This is common after color, bleach, relaxer, or a long stretch of heavy conditioning with no protein at all.

Treating the wrong one

Adding protein to hair that is only dry makes it stiff, rough and brittle, and it will start snapping within a couple of washes. Adding more moisture to hair that is structurally weak makes it mushier and limper, and the strand loses whatever integrity it had left. Both feel like the original problem getting worse, which is why people escalate rather than reconsider, and why the test is worth doing before buying anything.

Keeping them in balance

Most routines should be mainly moisture, with protein as an occasional intervention rather than a fixture. A light protein treatment every four to six weeks suits most processed hair; unprocessed hair may need none. Always follow protein with moisture in the same session. And if you are treating the same problem for months without improvement, re-test rather than doubling the dose.
