A deep conditioner is a rinse-out treatment left on for twenty minutes or more, usually with heat, to get further into the strand than a two-minute conditioner can. It is the single most useful thing most people can add to a routine, and it is also the one most often done in a way that wastes the product.
Warmth lifts the cuticle slightly and softens the product, so more of it gets past the surface of the hair rather than sitting on it. A hooded dryer does this best, a plastic cap under a warm towel does it well enough, and your own body heat under a cap does more than nothing. Twenty minutes with heat beats an hour without it. This is the difference between a deep conditioner and an ordinary conditioner left on longer.
Twenty to thirty minutes is where the benefit is. Leaving it on for hours or sleeping in it adds very little and can leave hair feeling soft but weak, since prolonged saturation swells the strand. Apply to clean, damp hair in sections so every part is actually coated, which is where most of the wasted product goes: onto the outer layer only.
Deep conditioners split into two broad families. Moisture formulas soften, add slip and improve elasticity, and are what most hair needs most of the time. Protein or reconstructing formulas strengthen a weakened strand and are a different job entirely, used occasionally rather than weekly. Using a protein-heavy deep conditioner every week is a common cause of hair that feels rough and snaps, and it looks like a moisture problem while being the opposite.
Weekly suits most textured hair. Every other week suits hair that is fine, low porosity or gets weighed down easily. After a take-down, after color, or after a stretch of heat styling, do one immediately rather than waiting for the schedule. If your hair feels soft and pliable and detangles easily, the frequency is right.
Rinse in cool water, which helps the cuticle lie flat and leaves more shine than a hot rinse. Follow with a leave-in on damp hair before styling. If hair feels coated rather than conditioned after several weeks of deep conditioning, a clarifying wash will reset it and the next treatment will work better.
