Leave-In Conditioner: Choosing One

A leave-in conditioner is the product that stays in your hair after you wash it, and its job is to keep moisture in the strand for the days between washes. It is not a substitute for the conditioner you rinse out, and it is not a styler. Understanding that it sits between those two is most of what makes a routine work.

What it actually does

Rinse-out conditioner works while it is on the hair and most of it leaves down the drain. A leave-in stays, coating the strand and slowing the rate at which water escapes. That is why textured and curly hair, which dries out fastest because the natural oils cannot travel down a bend easily, benefits most from one. It also adds slip, which makes detangling far safer, and that alone justifies it for anyone whose hair tangles.

Where it goes in the order

On damp hair, straight after washing and before any styling product or oil. The common shorthand is liquid, oil, cream, applied in that order: the leave-in delivers the water-based moisture, the oil seals it in, the cream sets the style. Applying oil first coats the strand and stops the leave-in getting in, which is the single most common reason a routine feels like it is not working.

Matching it to your hair

Fine hair needs a light spray or milk, since a thick cream will flatten it and leave it looking greasy by the second day. Medium and thick textured hair takes a lotion or cream comfortably. Coarse, dry or high porosity hair, which loses water fastest, can take the heaviest creams and butters. If you are unsure, start lighter than you think and add more; you can always apply a second layer, but you cannot take one off without washing.

How much and how often

Section the hair, apply through the mid-lengths and ends, and keep it off the scalp, which does not need it and gets buildup instead. Reapply lightly on the days between washes wherever the hair feels dry, particularly the ends. If your hair feels coated, limp or stops absorbing product, that is buildup rather than a failing leave-in.
