Reading a Hair Product Label in Detroit

Most people choose hair products by the front of the bottle and are disappointed by what's in it. The useful information is on the back, and a handful of ingredient families explain most of what a product will do to your hair. Our Detroit store off Gratiot near 7 Mile stocks the range wide enough that choosing on ingredients is actually possible.

Sulfates

Sulfates are the detergents that make shampoo lather and strip oil efficiently. That's useful once in a while for removing buildup, and harsh as a weekly default on dry or textured hair. Sulfate-free shampoos clean more gently and lather less, which is not a sign they aren't working. Keeping a clarifying sulfate shampoo for occasional use alongside a gentle daily one is the practical setup.

Silicones

Silicones coat the hair, making it feel smooth and look shiny immediately. Water-soluble ones rinse out; heavier ones build up and need a clarifying wash to remove. They aren't damaging in themselves, but layered under moisture products they block the moisture from getting in, which is why hair can feel great and behave badly at the same time.

Protein and moisture

Protein, listed as hydrolyzed keratin, wheat or silk, temporarily patches gaps in a damaged hair shaft and adds strength. Too much makes hair stiff and prone to snapping. Moisture products soften and add flexibility. Hair needs both, and the balance shifts: chemically treated or heat-styled hair needs more protein, and hair that feels brittle after protein needs moisture instead.

Humectants and oils

Humectants like glycerin pull water from the air into the hair, which works beautifully in moderate humidity and works against you in very dry or very humid conditions. Oils and butters seal rather than moisturize, so they belong after a water-based product rather than instead of one.

Our Detroit store

Our Detroit store is at 15221 Houston Whittier St, just off Gratiot near 7 Mile on the east side, and it's the one that handles every online pickup order. It opens at 8:45 AM every day but Sunday, with the latest closing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8:15 PM. Coming from downtown or Midtown, Gratiot runs straight there; from the west side, 7 Mile or Davison to Conner is the quickest way over.
