Clarifying Shampoo: When and How Often

A clarifying shampoo strips the hair rather than cleaning it gently, and that is the point. Every other product you use leaves something behind, and over weeks that residue accumulates into a film that keeps water and conditioner out. Clarifying removes it and resets the hair. Used at the right interval it makes everything else work better; used weekly it dries hair out.

What buildup looks like

Hair that feels coated or waxy when dry. Product that sits on the surface instead of absorbing. Curls that will not clump. Hair that looks dull however much you condition it, or feels heavy and limp without being oily. If your usual deep conditioner has stopped doing anything, buildup is the first thing to suspect, not the conditioner.

Where it comes from

Silicones and heavy oils in styling products, which is the largest source for most people. Dry shampoo. Gels and edge control. Butters and creams left on the scalp. Anyone using a lot of product on a protective style is accumulating it faster, and anyone using no product at all may not need to clarify more than a few times a year.

Chelating shampoos and mineral deposits

A chelating shampoo is a step beyond clarifying: it binds minerals rather than just removing product film. It is what to reach for if you are on well water, if your hair feels rough and film-like after washing regardless of what you use, or if you swim in chlorinated water regularly. Ordinary clarifying shampoo does not remove mineral deposits, which is why some people clarify repeatedly and feel no improvement.

How often

Once a month is a reasonable default. Every two weeks if you use a lot of product or heavy oils, every couple of months if you use very little. Never as your regular shampoo. If your hair feels dry and rough after clarifying, that is expected, which is why the next step is not optional.

What to do straight afterward

Follow every clarifying wash with a deep conditioner, and give it heat and the full twenty minutes. Clarified hair is open and absorbent, so this is the treatment that does the most good all month. Skipping it is what gives clarifying its reputation for wrecking hair, when the wash itself is not the problem.
