Protein Treatments: When You Need One

Protein treatments repair strength, not softness. Hair is largely protein, and processes that damage it, color, relaxer, bleach, heat and constant tension, leave gaps in that structure. A protein treatment temporarily fills those gaps so the strand holds together. Used when needed it rescues hair. Used on a schedule it causes the exact damage people take it for.

The stretch test

Take a single shed strand, wet it, and pull gently from both ends. Hair that stretches a long way and does not return, feeling gummy or mushy, needs protein. Hair that snaps immediately with almost no stretch needs moisture, not protein. Hair that stretches a little and springs back is in balance and needs neither. Do this before buying anything, because the two problems feel similar in the hand and the wrong treatment makes each worse.

Strengths

Products range from light protein conditioners you can use every couple of weeks, through medium treatments, to heavy reconstructors intended for seriously damaged hair and used rarely. Start at the lightest level that matches your damage. A reconstructor on hair that is only mildly weakened is the fastest route to the problem in the next section.

Signs you have had too much

Hair that feels rough, straw-like, stiff or brittle, that snaps when you comb it, that will not hold moisture no matter what you put on it. This is protein overload, and it is common in people following a routine they read about rather than one their hair asked for. The fix is to stop all protein, do a moisture deep conditioner, and give it a few washes. It resolves, but not overnight.

How often

For most people, every four to six weeks at most, and only when the stretch test says so. Chemically processed or heavily heat-styled hair may need it more often; hair that is largely unprocessed may never need it at all. Always follow a protein treatment with a moisture conditioner in the same session, since protein alone leaves the hair stiff.

Where it fits with everything else

Protein is an occasional intervention within a routine that is otherwise about moisture. If you find yourself using it monthly for years, the honest question is what keeps damaging the hair, since a treatment that patches a strand is not addressing the heat, the color or the tension that opened it up.
