How to Detangle Without Breakage

Detangle damp, never soaking or bone dry, with plenty of conditioner for slip, in small sections, always from the ends upward. Most breakage in textured hair happens during detangling rather than during styling, and almost all of it is avoidable by changing the order of operations rather than the products.

Wet, damp or dry

Bone dry textured hair has no give and snaps under a comb. Soaking wet hair is at its weakest and stretches rather than resisting, so knots tighten instead of releasing. Damp hair with conditioner in it is the sweet spot: enough water to be flexible, enough product to slide. If you are detangling in the shower, do it with conditioner on, not with shampoo on, since shampoo removes exactly the slip you need.

Slip does more than technique

Conditioner, a detangling spray, or a leave-in with good slip is what lets strands pass each other rather than catching. A generous amount of a cheap conditioner beats a small amount of an expensive one for this specific job. If your comb is dragging, the answer is more product, not more force. This is the single most useful adjustment for anyone whose hair breaks when they comb it.

Sections and direction

Work in four to eight sections, clipped apart, and finish one before moving on. Start at the ends and work upward in short passes, releasing each knot before moving higher. Combing from the root down drags every tangle in the section into one mass at the ends, which is where people give up and pull. Fingers first, then a wide-tooth comb, then a brush only if you use one at all.

A wide-tooth comb with smooth, seamless teeth, since molded plastic seams catch and tear. A detangling brush with flexible bristles if you prefer one. Fine-tooth combs have no place in textured hair outside of parting. Whatever you use, check it for rough edges with your fingertip; a comb with a burr on one tooth will shred hair without you noticing.

After a take-down

This is when detangling matters most, because weeks of shed hair are released at once. Cut off the added length first, work through with conditioner, take it in short sessions rather than one long one, and expect a large amount of hair to come out. That volume is shedding, not breakage, if the pieces are long with a small white bulb at one end. Short broken pieces are a different signal and mean the style or the take-down was too rough.
