What Hair Growth Products Can and Cannot Do

Hair grows from the follicle, below the surface of the scalp, at a rate largely set by genetics, health, hormones and age. Nothing applied to the outside of a strand changes that rate, because the strand itself is not alive. Anything promising to speed growth is describing something that is not happening.

Retention is the real goal

Most people who feel their hair does not grow are actually growing hair at a perfectly normal rate and losing length at the other end. Hair breaks off through dryness, heat, tension, rough detangling and chemical processing at roughly the pace it grows, so the length stays the same year after year. Fixing that is entirely within your control, and it is the thing that actually produces longer hair. Gentler detangling, less heat, looser styles, consistent moisture and regular trims of split ends do more for length than any bottle on the shelf.

What a scalp product can genuinely do

A clean, comfortable, well-circulated scalp is a better environment for growing hair than a dry, flaking, irritated one, and products that relieve dryness or itching are worth using for that reason. Massage increases blood flow to the area and is pleasant and harmless. Products that keep the scalp calm under a long-worn protective style help you keep that style in without damage. None of this is speeding growth; all of it is removing obstacles to it.

Where thinning actually comes from

Tension is the biggest cause we see in a beauty supply context. Braids installed too tight, the same tight ponytail daily, heavy units on a fine hairline, styles worn too long. That kind of loss builds slowly and, caught early, recovers when the tension stops. Left for years it can stop recovering. A page of oil will not undo it; changing how the hair is worn will.

When to see a doctor rather than buy a product

Sudden shedding, hair coming out in patches, loss concentrated at the crown or a widening part, scalp pain, scaling or sores. These have medical causes, from thyroid conditions to autoimmune ones to nutritional deficiencies, and a dermatologist can identify them. Buying oils for months while an underlying cause goes untreated costs both money and time when time matters.
