Hair Oils and Scalp Care in Metro Detroit

Scalp problems get treated with hair products, which is why they persist, and oils get used in ways that work against the hair rather than for it. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry oils, treatments and applicators alongside the shampoos.

Oil seals, it does not moisturize

Water is the moisturizer; oil is what keeps it in. Applying oil to dry hair coats it and locks moisture out rather than in. The order that works is a water-based leave-in first, on damp hair, then oil or butter over it. Getting that order backwards is the most common mistake in a routine.

Choosing an oil

Lighter oils suit fine and low porosity hair, which is easily weighed down and where heavy products sit on the surface and build up. Heavier oils and butters suit coarse and high porosity hair, which loses moisture quickly and needs sealing. There's no single best oil; there's the one that matches how your hair behaves.

Dry scalp or dandruff

Two different conditions producing similar-looking flakes, needing opposite treatment. A dry scalp sheds small pale flakes and feels tight, and moisture settles it. Dandruff sheds larger, oilier flakes that cling, usually with itching, and it is associated with yeast feeding on scalp oil, so oiling it feeds the problem.

Getting product to the scalp

A bottle with a nozzle applicator puts oil or treatment on the scalp rather than the hair, which matters most under braids or a wig. Massage with fingertips rather than nails. Persistent itching, sore patches or hair loss in one area needs a dermatologist rather than another product.
