Choosing hold

Buy for the style, not for the strongest number on the shelf. Light hold smooths flyaways on fine or fragile edges. Medium is the everyday choice. Firm and extra-firm exist for sleek looks that must survive humidity, and they are the ones most often bought unnecessarily.

Gel, pomade or spray

Gels dry harder and hold longest but flake if layered. Pomades and creams stay softer, look shinier and are gentler on the hairline, though they let go sooner. Laying gels and sprays sold for wigs hold harder still and are formulated for lace rather than skin, so they aren't an everyday choice for your own edges.

Use less than you think

Start with a pea-sized amount for the whole hairline and add only if it genuinely will not lie down. Anything sitting on the surface rather than coating the hair is what turns white and flakes as it dries, and the instinct to add more when that happens compounds it.

Washing it out

Because it is formulated to resist water, ordinary rinsing leaves a residue along the hairline. That residue accumulates, holds dirt against the skin and can irritate the follicles where the hair is already finest. Clean the hairline properly at every wash rather than trusting the shower to do it.
