Flat irons look similar on the shelf and behave very differently on hair. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry them alongside dryers, curling irons and pressing combs, and the differences worth paying for are narrower than the packaging suggests.

Plates

Ceramic heats evenly and gently, which suits fine or damaged hair. Titanium heats faster and holds temperature under thick hair, which is efficient but less forgiving. Tourmaline is usually a coating that helps with frizz. Solid ceramic beats ceramic-coated metal, which wears through and starts snagging.

Adjustable heat is the feature that matters

A single fixed temperature is the one to avoid. Fine, color-treated or damaged hair should be styled well below maximum; coarse hair needs more. A dial or digital control lets you use the lowest setting that works in one pass, which is what protects hair over years.

Width and edges

An inch to an inch and a quarter is the versatile width for most people. Rounded outer edges let you curl or bend with the same tool. Floating plates, which move under pressure, make even contact and reduce the snagging that pulls hair out.

Buy protectant with it

Heat protectant every time, on fully dry hair, since ironing damp hair boils the water inside the shaft. Hair that feels rough after ironing, ends that look see-through, or curls that stop reverting are signs of too much heat, and heat damage grows out rather than repairing.
