Curling Irons, Wands and Rods in Metro Detroit

There are two ways to put a curl in hair: with heat, or by setting it and letting it dry. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry both, and which suits you depends on your hair and how much heat it can take.

Curling iron or wand

A curling iron has a clamp, which makes it easier to control and produces a uniform, structured curl. A wand has no clamp, so you wrap and hold the hair yourself, which takes practice but gives a looser, more natural result. If you're choosing one, an iron is more forgiving to learn on.

Barrel size

Diameter decides the result more than technique does. Narrow barrels give tight springy curls that relax into waves through the day, which is why they suit anyone whose hair drops a curl quickly. Wide barrels give loose waves immediately, and on fine hair those fall out sooner than the tighter version would.

Rods and rollers, no heat required

Perm rods, flexi-rods and rollers set a curl as the hair dries, which lasts longer than a heat curl and does no damage. They need setting lotion or mousse, even tension, and complete drying, since a set taken down damp drops within the hour. A hooded dryer turns hours of air drying into minutes.

Protecting the hair

Heat protectant every time, and the lowest temperature that works in one pass. Two passes at a low setting damages more than one pass at the right one. Let curls cool completely before touching them, since they set as they cool, and separate with fingers rather than a brush if you want definition.
