Straightening Technique and Avoiding Heat Damage

A good flat iron used badly gives a worse result than a modest one used well. The variables that matter are how you section, how fast you move and how many times you go over the same hair. Our Roseville store at Gratiot and 12 Mile carries hot tools and the products around them, open until 8:45 PM most nights.

Start with properly dried hair

Hair has to be fully dry before an iron touches it. Blow-drying with a nozzle and a brush, pulling the hair taut, does most of the straightening before the iron is involved, which means fewer passes with the plates. Air-dried hair that looks dry can still hold moisture at the root, so the last few minutes with a dryer are worth doing.

Small sections, one pass

Sections about an inch wide and no thicker than the plates can heat through. A section too thick straightens on the outside and leaves the inside untouched, which is what sends people back for a second and third pass. Move slowly and steadily from root to end in one continuous motion rather than stopping partway.

Clamp pressure and the root

Too much pressure creates a dent where the plate started, particularly near the root. Start about a centimetre from the scalp with even, moderate pressure. If you want lift at the root, direct the section upward as you pass rather than squeezing harder.

Making it last

Humidity is what undoes a press. A light serum or anti-humidity product after styling helps, though it can't defeat a rainy day. At night, wrapping the hair and covering it with a satin scarf or bonnet keeps it smooth. Avoid re-ironing on day two out of habit; brushing and wrapping usually revives it without more heat.

Our Roseville store

Our Roseville store is at 28800 Gratiot Ave, at Gratiot and 12 Mile, and it has the latest Sunday closing of our four stores, at 7:30 PM. It's the closest Kelly Beauty for Roseville, Fraser, Clinton Township, Mount Clemens and anyone coming down Gratiot or I-94 from northern Macomb County. Monday through Saturday it's open until 8:45 PM.
