Start low and work up

Begin at a lower setting and do one pass on a small section. If the hair straightens, that's your temperature. If it doesn't, go up one step and try again. The goal is the lowest setting that works in a single pass, because two passes at a low temperature does more damage than one pass at the right one.

Rough guides by hair type

Fine, damaged or color-treated hair generally sits at the low end of the dial. Medium, healthy hair sits in the middle. Coarse, thick or very curly hair needs the higher end to straighten in one pass. Chemically relaxed hair is more heat-sensitive than it looks and should be treated as fine rather than coarse.

Heat protectant is not optional

A protectant puts a barrier between the plate and the hair shaft and helps distribute heat rather than concentrating it.
