Choosing a Flat Iron in Detroit

Plate material

Ceramic heats evenly and gently, which suits fine or damaged hair and anyone still learning. Titanium heats faster and holds temperature better under thick hair, which makes it efficient but less forgiving. Tourmaline is usually a coating over one of the two and helps with frizz and shine. Solid ceramic beats a ceramic-coated metal plate, which wears through and starts snagging.

Plate width

Narrow plates around an inch suit shorter hair, fringes and getting close to the root. Wider plates cover more per pass, which saves time on long or thick hair but is awkward around the face. For most people one inch to an inch and a quarter is the versatile choice.

Adjustable heat is not optional

A single fixed temperature is the feature to avoid. Fine, color-treated or damaged hair should be styled well below the maximum, and coarse hair needs more. An iron with a dial or digital control lets you use the lowest temperature that actually works, which is what protects the hair over years of use.

Rounded edges and floating plates

Rounded outer edges let you curl or bend with the same tool rather than buying a second one. Floating plates, which move slightly under pressure, make even contact along the hair and reduce the snagging that pulls hair out. Both are worth more in daily use than most of the features advertised on the box.

Coming from downtown or Midtown, Gratiot runs straight there; from the west side, 7 Mile or Davison to Conner is the quickest way over.
