Flat Irons, Curling Irons and Pressing Combs in Warren

Our Warren store on Van Dyke in the Majestic Plaza carries the hot tools together, which makes it easier to work out which one you actually need instead of buying a flat iron and using it for everything. It's open until 9 PM Monday through Saturday, so there's time after work to compare.

What each tool is for

A flat iron straightens, and with rounded plates it can bend or curl. A curling iron has a clamp and produces a uniform curl, which suits structured sets. A wand has no clamp and gives a looser, more natural curl, but you hold the hair yourself so it takes practice. A pressing comb straightens at the root and along the hairline in a way plates struggle to reach on textured hair.

Barrel size on curling tools

Diameter is what sets the curl, more than technique. A narrow barrel produces a tight, springy curl that relaxes into a wave over a day. A wide barrel produces a loose wave from the start, which reads well on thick hair and drops out quickly on fine hair.

Dryers and attachments

A dryer with a concentrator nozzle directs air where you point it, which is what makes a smooth blow-out possible. A diffuser does the opposite, spreading air to dry curls without disturbing the pattern. Hooded dryers are a different job again, for setting rollers or drying a deep conditioner without any direct heat on the hair.

Caring for the tools

Wipe plates and barrels clean when cool, because product residue bakes on and transfers to hair, dulling it. Don't wrap cords tightly around the handle, since that's what breaks the wire near the base. Store irons fully cool, and replace any tool whose plates have started to chip, as chipped plates snag and tear.

Our Warren store

Our Warren store is at 27750 Van Dyke Ave in the Majestic Plaza shopping center, between 11 Mile and 12 Mile. It's open until 9 PM Monday through Saturday and 6:30 PM on Sunday, which makes it the usual evening stop for Warren, Center Line, Sterling Heights and the Oakland County suburbs off I-696. Van Dyke gets you there from the south, and the I-696 Van Dyke exit from the east or west.
