Shampoo and Conditioner in Metro Detroit

Shampoo and conditioner are the two products everyone buys and the two that most decide how hair behaves for the rest of the week. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry them from single bottles up to the back bar sizes salons use.

Choosing a shampoo

Sulfates are detergents that clean efficiently and strip oil, which is useful occasionally and harsh as a weekly default on dry or textured hair. A sulfate-free shampoo for regular washing plus a clarifying shampoo for occasional buildup is the setup that suits most people. If hair feels squeaky and tight after washing, the shampoo is too harsh.

Wash the scalp, not the lengths

The scalp gets oily and needs the detergent; the lengths get cleaned by the suds running down. Two washes are worth doing when there's heavy buildup, the first to lift and the second to clean. A cool final rinse helps the cuticle lie flat.

Conditioner, and the deeper version

Rinse-out conditioner goes on the lengths and ends at every wash and comes off after a few minutes. A deep conditioner is a longer, warmer treatment done weekly or every other week, and the heat under a cap is what separates it from simply leaving ordinary conditioner on. The two are not substitutes for one another.

Protein or moisture

Hair that stretches a long way when wet and doesn't spring back needs protein. Hair that feels rough and snaps quickly with no stretch needs moisture. Treating it for the wrong one makes it worse, and over-using protein is a common cause of the breakage people then try to fix with more protein.
