Co-Wash and Cleansing Conditioners

Co-washing means washing with a conditioner or a purpose-made cleansing conditioner instead of shampoo. It cleans with very mild agents rather than detergents, so it removes some dirt and oil while leaving the hair softer than a shampoo would. For dry, curly and coily hair it can be a genuine improvement. It also has a limit that gets glossed over, and knowing it is the difference between co-washing working and co-washing failing.

Who it suits

Hair that is dry, textured, coarse or color-treated, and anyone whose scalp is not oily. It suits people who wash frequently, since a full shampoo several times a week strips more than most textured hair can spare. It also suits anyone between washes who wants to refresh curls without a full reset.

Conditioner or cleansing conditioner

They are not the same. An ordinary rinse-out conditioner has essentially no cleansing agents in it, so using it as a wash mostly redistributes what is already there. A cleansing conditioner is formulated with mild surfactants to actually lift dirt while conditioning. If co-washing has left your hair limp and your scalp itchy, using the wrong product is the likeliest reason.

The limit nobody mentions

Co-wash does not remove silicones, heavy oils or product film, and it deposits conditioning agents of its own. Co-wash exclusively for long enough and you get the coated, heavy, unresponsive hair that people usually blame on hard water or a bad product. This is not an argument against co-washing; it is an argument for pairing it with something that clears the deck.

How to pair it

Co-wash between real washes, and use a clarifying shampoo roughly monthly to reset. Many people settle on co-washing two or three times for every one proper shampoo. If you use silicone-heavy stylers, shampoo more often within that pattern, since co-wash will not touch them.

Doing it properly

Use more product than you would for conditioning, apply it to the scalp rather than only the lengths, and work it in with your fingertips for a good minute or two. The mechanical action does much of the cleaning here, since the chemistry is doing less. Rinse thoroughly and for longer than feels necessary, because inadequate rinsing is the other common cause of limp results.
