Sulfate-free or gentle cleansing agents for regular washing, since harsh detergents strip what little oil reaches the ends. Humectants like glycerin to draw water in. Conditioning agents that give enough slip to detangle without breakage. Co-washes and cleansing conditioners are an option for very dry hair, cleaning with minimal detergent.

When you do want a clarifying shampoo

Buildup from gels, edge control, oils and hard water accumulates and blocks moisture from getting in, which makes hair feel dry no matter how much conditioner you use.
