Michigan winters are hard on textured hair for two reasons that compound each other: the air holds almost no moisture from December through March, and the hats and hoods you need outdoors rub against the hair for months. Heavier sealing, satin between your hair and everything else, and never leaving the house with wet hair covers most of it.
Outdoor cold gets the blame, but forced-air heating is what actually dries hair out. It runs constantly for months and strips humidity from indoor air, and your hair loses water to that air all day and all night. This is why hair that was fine in October feels brittle by January without anything else having changed. A humidifier in the bedroom does more for hair in a Michigan winter than most products do.
The routine does not change in structure, only in weight. Leave-in on damp hair, then a heavier sealant than you would use in July: a thicker cream or a butter through the mid-lengths and ends. The ends are oldest, driest and most exposed, and they are what break first in winter. Reapply to the ends between washes rather than to the whole head.
Wool, acrylic and fleece all pull moisture out of hair and rough up the cuticle every time you move. The fix is a satin-lined hat or a satin scarf under whatever you are wearing, and it is the single most effective winter change after the humidifier. The same applies to coat collars: shoulder-length and longer hair rubbing on a wool collar all winter is why the ends look worst by March.
Water in the hair shaft in freezing temperatures expands, and the strand is at its weakest wet. Beyond the discomfort, it causes real breakage. Allow proper drying time, wash earlier in the day or the night before, and use a hooded or bonnet dryer to finish the roots if you are short on time.
Static is a symptom of dry hair in dry air, not a separate problem, and it eases when the moisture routine improves. A light oil smoothed over the surface helps immediately. Deep conditioning weekly rather than fortnightly through the coldest months is worth the extra half hour, and a protective style reduces daily handling at the time of year when hair can least afford it.
