A satin bonnet is the cheapest thing in a beauty supply that makes a genuine difference to hair, and it works while you're asleep. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry bonnets, scarves, wraps and satin accessories in a range of sizes.

Why satin and not cotton

Cotton pulls moisture out of hair and creates friction as you move through the night, which lifts the cuticle and causes frizz, tangles and breakage over months. Satin lets hair slide instead of catching and doesn't absorb its moisture. That's the whole mechanism, and it explains why a bonnet outperforms most anti-frizz products.

Choosing a size

A bonnet that's too small rides up in the night and leaves the edges exposed, which defeats the point. Larger sizes exist for braids, locs, long installs and wigs, and using one is better than forcing everything into a standard bonnet. A wide, soft band holds without gripping the hairline, which matters if your edges are fragile.

Bonnet, scarf or pillowcase

A bonnet is the simplest and covers everything. A scarf gives more control for wrapping a press or laid edges, and takes practice to tie so it stays put. A satin pillowcase is the fallback for anyone who won't keep anything on their head, and it protects less completely but is better than cotton.
