Scalp Care: Dryness, Flaking and Buildup

Scalp problems get treated with hair products, which is why they persist. The scalp is skin, and it needs different things from the hair growing out of it. Our Warren store on Van Dyke in the Majestic Plaza stocks scalp treatments, medicated shampoos, oils and applicators, open until 9 PM Monday through Saturday.

Dry scalp or dandruff

The flakes look alike and the treatments are opposites, which is why so many people spend months on the wrong one. Dry scalp gives small dry flakes and a tight feeling and responds to moisture. Dandruff gives larger, oilier, clingier flakes with itching, and adding oil to it makes it worse.

Buildup

Product, sweat and dead skin accumulate on the scalp, particularly under braids, wigs and daily styling products. Buildup causes itching, flaking and, over time, irritation around the follicles. A clarifying shampoo every few weeks, or a scalp scrub, clears it. Someone who lays edges daily or wears protective styles needs this more often than someone who doesn't.

Getting product to the scalp

A bottle with a nozzle applicator puts oil or treatment where it's needed instead of on the hair, which matters most when a style is in. Massaging with fingertips for a minute or two helps the product spread and increases blood flow. Nails scratching the scalp cause small injuries that make itching worse.

What not to do

Don't layer heavy grease onto a scalp that's already flaking, and don't scratch before washing, which is common advice and causes irritation. Persistent itching, sore patches, bumps or hair loss in one area needs a dermatologist rather than another product.

Our Warren store is at 27750 Van Dyke Ave in the Majestic Plaza shopping center, between 11 Mile and 12 Mile. It's open until 9 PM Monday through Saturday and 6:30 PM on Sunday, which makes it the usual evening stop for Warren, Center Line, Sterling Heights and the Oakland County suburbs off I-696. Van Dyke gets you there from the south, and the I-696 Van Dyke exit from the east or west.
