Building a Wash Day Routine

Wash day takes as long as it takes largely because of the order things are done in. Getting the sequence right shortens it and improves the result. Super Kelly Beauty on Gratiot near 8 Mile stocks the full hair care range, open until 8:45 PM Monday through Saturday.

Before the water

Detangle dry or with a pre-poo oil or conditioner, working from the ends up with a wide-tooth comb, in sections. Hair is weakest wet, so tangles removed beforehand cause far less breakage. A pre-shampoo oil treatment on very dry hair also reduces how much the shampoo strips.

Cleansing

Shampoo the scalp, not the lengths. The scalp is what gets oily and needs the detergent; the lengths get cleaned enough by the suds running down. Two washes are worth doing if there's heavy buildup, the first to lift and the second to clean. Cool water for the final rinse helps the cuticle lie flat.

Conditioning in the right order

Rinse-out conditioner belongs on the lengths and ends at every wash, left for a few minutes. A deep conditioner is a separate step, done less often, and it earns its name only with warmth under a cap and a proper twenty minutes. Doing the second in place of the first, or vice versa, is why some routines never quite work.

Styling on damp hair

Leave-in first, while the hair is still damp, because that's what carries the moisture. Then cream or gel for hold and definition. Then oil last, to seal it in. Applying oil before the water-based products coats the hair and locks moisture out rather than in, which is the most common ordering mistake.

How often

Most textured hair does well on a wash every one to two weeks. Daily washing strips it faster than the scalp replaces the oil; leaving it a month lets product and scalp buildup sit and block everything you apply afterward. Heavy gel or oil use pushes the interval shorter, not longer.
