Protein, Moisture and Deep Conditioning

Hair that feels wrong is usually short of one of two things, and treating it for the wrong one makes it worse. Our Roseville store at Gratiot and 12 Mile stocks deep conditioners, protein treatments and reconstructors, and telling them apart is the useful skill.

How to tell which you need

Take a wet strand and stretch it gently. If it stretches a long way and doesn't spring back, or snaps limply, it needs protein. If it feels rough, stiff and snaps quickly with almost no stretch, it needs moisture. Hair that is mushy and limp when wet is over-moisturized; hair that is brittle and straw-like is over-proteined.

Using a deep conditioner properly

Apply to clean, damp hair in sections so every strand is coated, focusing on the ends. Cover with a plastic cap. Heat, from a hooded dryer, a warm towel or body heat under a cap, opens the cuticle and makes a real difference to how much gets in. Follow the time on the label rather than leaving it overnight, which does not add benefit.

Protein treatments

Use less often than deep conditioners, typically every four to six weeks, and always follow with a moisturizing conditioner to restore flexibility. Reconstructors are the strongest form and are meant for hair that is genuinely damaged from color, relaxer or heat, not as routine maintenance. Over-using protein is a common cause of the breakage people then try to fix with more protein.

When to see a professional instead

If hair is breaking off in sections, shedding in unusual quantity from the root, or changing texture in one area, that is not a conditioner problem. Chemical damage from overlapping relaxer or bleach needs a stylist's assessment, and scalp conditions need a dermatologist.
