Hair Color, Developer and Bleach in Metro Detroit

All four Kelly Beauty stores carry professional color, developer and lightener alongside ready-made box kits, which means you can control the developer volume and mixing rather than accepting whatever is in the box.

Levels and developer

Color is described on a scale from 1, black, to 10, palest blonde, and your starting level decides what's achievable. Developer comes in 10, 20, 30 and 40 volume: 10 deposits without lifting, 20 is the general-purpose choice and lifts one to two levels with good gray coverage, 30 lifts more and is harsher, and 40 is where home damage happens.

Why color goes brassy

Warm pigment sits under every dark hair, and lifting exposes it, which is why lightened dark hair turns orange or yellow rather than ash. Toners and ash-based colors counteract it. Understanding that before you start explains most disappointing results.

Bleach

Bleach dissolves pigment and permanently weakens the hair, and dark hair does not go blonde in one session. Multiple sessions spaced weeks apart with conditioning between is the only way to lift significantly without losing hair. Never bleach hair that's already damaged, recently relaxed or chemically straightened.

Test first

A patch test 48 hours ahead for reaction, and a strand test on hidden hair for the actual result and timing. Both take minutes. For a significant lift or a color correction, a stylist is genuinely the cheaper option, since correcting a home result costs more than the original service would have.
