Pressing Combs in Metro Detroit

A pressing comb does something a flat iron struggles with: straightening right at the root and along the hairline on textured hair, where plates can't get close enough without touching the scalp. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry electric pressing combs and stove models.

Electric or stove

Electric combs heat themselves and hold a set temperature, which makes them safer and more predictable, and most have adjustable heat. Stove combs are heated separately and hold heat well through thick hair, but the temperature is judged rather than set, which takes experience and is easy to get badly wrong.

Where it beats a flat iron

At the root and around the hairline, where a comb's teeth reach in close and pull the hair straight in one motion. On thick, coarse textures where plates would need several passes. Many people use a pressing comb at the root and a flat iron down the length, which is fewer passes overall than the iron alone.

Using one without damage

Hair must be completely dry. Heat protectant every time. Test the temperature on a piece of tissue or a white cloth before it goes near hair, since a comb that scorches paper will scorch hair. Work in small sections, move steadily, and keep the comb away from the scalp itself, which burns easily.

Aftercare

Pressed hair reverts with humidity and moisture, and pushing it with more heat is what causes heat damage that doesn't grow out. Wrap the hair at night under a satin scarf, use an anti-humidity product, and accept the reversion rather than re-pressing every day.
