Hair Porosity and Choosing Products That Work

Two people with the same curl pattern can get completely different results from the same product, and porosity explains most of it. Our Detroit store off Gratiot near 7 Mile carries a wide enough range that choosing on how your hair behaves, rather than on packaging, is actually possible.

What porosity means

Porosity describes how easily the hair cuticle lets moisture in and out. Low porosity hair has a tightly closed cuticle: water beads on it, products sit on top, and it takes a long time to get wet and a long time to dry. High porosity hair has an open or damaged cuticle: it absorbs water instantly and loses it just as fast, so it dries quickly and feels dry again soon after.

A rough test

Take a clean strand with no product on it and drop it into a glass of water. If it floats for several minutes, porosity is likely low. If it sinks quickly, likely high. If it hovers in the middle, medium. It's a rough guide rather than a laboratory test, but it usually matches how the hair behaves day to day.

What low porosity hair needs

Lighter products, since heavy butters and oils sit on the surface and cause buildup rather than moisturizing. Warmth helps: applying deep conditioner with heat under a cap opens the cuticle enough to let it in. Clarify regularly, because buildup is the constant problem. Liquid leave-ins and light oils work better than thick creams.

What high porosity hair needs

Heavier products that seal, since the problem is losing moisture rather than absorbing it. Creams, butters and thicker oils applied over a water-based leave-in. Protein treatments help, because open cuticles often mean damage, and protein temporarily fills the gaps. Cooler final rinses and gentle handling reduce further cuticle damage.

Our Detroit store

Our Detroit store is at 15221 Houston Whittier St, just off Gratiot near 7 Mile on the east side, and it's the one that handles every online pickup order. It opens at 8:45 AM every day but Sunday, with the latest closing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8:15 PM. Coming from downtown or Midtown, Gratiot runs straight there; from the west side, 7 Mile or Davison to Conner is the quickest way over.
