How to Blend Leave-Out with a Sew-In

The trick is choosing hair that matches your texture rather than forcing your texture to match the hair. Almost every ruined leave-out comes from the second approach: flat ironing the same small section on high heat, week after week, to make it lie against bone-straight extensions it was never going to match.

Match the hair to your hair

If your natural texture blown out is coarse with body, kinky straight hair meets it most of the way and needs very little heat to blend. If your hair is looser or relaxed, a straight or body wave bundle blends easily. The question to ask in the store is not which hair looks best in the pack, but which hair looks most like your hair when your hair is dry and stretched. Bring a photo of it blown out.

Leave out less than you think

A thin section at the front and along the part is enough to cover a track and give a natural top. People leave out a wide band because they are worried about coverage, and the result is more hair to style daily and more hair at risk. A narrow leave-out, well blended, looks better than a wide one that never quite matches. If you find you need a lot out, a closure install removes the problem entirely.

Blend both together, not separately

Style the leave-out and the extension hair in the same pass. Curl them together on the same rod, or run the flat iron through both at the join. Treating them as two sections and hoping they meet in the middle is what leaves a visible seam. At the join specifically, a slightly larger curl or a light bend in both breaks the line better than pin-straight hair does.

Protect the section that is out

Heat protectant every single time. The lowest temperature that does the job. Rotate the exact parting a little between installs so the same strands are not always exposed. On days you are not going out, wrap or pin the leave-out rather than restyling it. And use a protein treatment periodically on that section, since it takes more damage than the rest of your head.

Alternatives to daily heat

A roller set or a flexi-rod set on the leave-out blends into wavy extensions with no direct heat at all, and holds for days. This is the single best change most people can make. If your leave-out is already rough, thin or breaking, stop leaving it out: a closure, frontal or full unit lets it recover while you keep wearing the style.
