Kinky Straight Bundles: What to Expect

Kinky straight exists for one job, and it does it better than any other texture on the bundle wall: it matches natural hair that has been blown out or pressed. It is straight, but with a coarse, slightly textured body rather than the glassy smoothness of silky straight hair, which is exactly what natural hair looks like after a blow dryer.

Why the blend works

Pressed natural hair is not silky. It has volume, a little wave, and a matte finish. Put bone-straight hair next to it and the difference is obvious at the join, which is why so many leave-outs get flat ironed to death trying to force a match. Kinky straight meets it most of the way, so the leave-out needs far less heat and far less work to sit convincingly against the wefts.

Where it gets used

Sew-ins with leave-out, U-part and V-part wigs, and half wigs, which are all the styles where your own hair is visible against the extension. It is also chosen by people who want length without their hair looking like a different person's, since it keeps the body and movement of textured hair. It is a less common choice for a full closure install, where nothing of yours shows and a smoother texture is easier to maintain.

Kinky straight is sold in coarse and lighter grades, and it is worth looking at the actual bundle rather than the label, since the same words cover a range. Bring a photo of your hair blown out, or better, come in with it pressed. The match is about texture and body, not just color, and a bundle that looks right in the pack can be too fine or too coarse against your own hair.

Care

It behaves like the natural hair it imitates, which means it needs moisture and it will revert somewhat when it meets humidity. A leave-in and a light oil keeps it from going dry and rough. Wrap it or braid it loosely at night. Detangle from the ends with a wide-tooth comb; the coarser body catches more than silky hair does.
