How Many Bundles Do I Need for a Sew-In?

The short answer is three bundles for most installs. Two is enough up to about 14 inches, three covers 16 to 20 inches, and four is the sensible count from 22 inches up. If you are adding a closure or frontal, it takes the place of roughly a third of a bundle at the front but does not reduce the number you need behind it.

Why length changes the count

A bundle is sold by weight, not by volume, usually around 100 grams. At 12 inches that weight is packed into short hair, so the bundle looks thick and covers a lot. At 24 inches the same weight is stretched down the length, so it looks noticeably thinner and covers less. This is why a length that seemed generous on the shelf can look sparse installed, and why longer installs need more bundles rather than the same number of longer ones.

Texture adjusts it

Wavy and curly textures occupy more space than straight hair of the same weight, so many people find they need one bundle fewer in deep wave or water wave than in bone straight for the same visual fullness. Straight hair is the least forgiving here: any gap in coverage shows, so if you are between counts on a straight install, buy the extra bundle.

What a closure or frontal changes

A closure covers the parting area, so hair that would have been sewn there is no longer needed, but the area it covers is small. A 4x4 closure removes a little of the front requirement, a 13x4 frontal removes more since it spans the hairline. Neither reduces the count behind the ears or at the back, which is where most of the hair goes. Plan the closure as an addition to your three bundles rather than a substitute for one.

Density and your own head

These numbers assume a full install with average density. If you want a very full look, add one. If your own hair is being left out and blended, you need slightly less added hair to reach the same visual density. Head size varies more than people expect, and a stylist who has done your hair before will give you a better number than any general guide.

Buy the whole set together

Color codes and texture vary between production batches, and a bundle bought three weeks later can be visibly different in tone or pattern even with the same code on the wrapper. Buy every bundle plus the closure in one purchase, and keep a wrapper. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry bundles and matching closures, and the range is on kellybeautyonline.com with $4.99 shipping anywhere in Michigan.
