Water Wave Bundles: What to Expect

Water wave is the least regular pattern on the bundle wall, and that is its appeal. Where deep wave repeats an even S down the length, water wave moves in and out of definition, closer to hair that has dried by itself after a swim. In an install, that irregularity does a lot of work hiding tracks and parting lines.

What it looks like installed

Fuller than body wave, softer and less structured than deep wave. The pattern varies within a single bundle, so the finished head does not have the repeating look that gives some installs away. It sits somewhere between a wave and a curl in volume, and it responds strongly to how wet it is, looking most defined damp and softest fully dry.

Moisture is not optional

This texture dries out faster than the smoother patterns and shows it immediately as frizz. A leave-in through the lengths after every wash, a light oil on the ends, and a water spray between washes is the minimum. Where straight bundles can be neglected for a week without looking bad, water wave cannot. Anyone who does not want a daily routine should look at body wave instead.

Handling frizz

Frizz here comes from friction and from touching the hair while it dries, not usually from the quality of the bundle. Scrunch it upward while damp, then leave it. Sleeping in a loose braid or a bonnet prevents most of it. A finishing product with slip smooths the surface without gluing the pattern together, which is what a heavy gel does.

Matching a closure

Water wave is one of the harder textures to pair, because the pattern is deliberately uneven and two batches can differ noticeably. Buy the closure or frontal at the same time as the bundles, in the same water wave texture and color code, and look at them side by side before leaving the store. A closure with a tighter or more regular pattern than the bundles around it shows at the parting, which is the one place nobody can avoid looking.

How many bundles

The same rules as any texture: three bundles covers most shoulder to mid-back installs, four for longer or fuller. Because water wave has volume, many people find they need one bundle fewer than they would in a straight texture for the same visual fullness.
