Wash day works best as a fixed sequence rather than a set of products. The order matters more than what is in the bottles, and most people who find wash day exhausting are doing the right steps in the wrong order, usually detangling at the wrong moment.
Section the hair first, four to eight sections clipped apart. Pre-detangle each section with conditioner or oil. Shampoo the scalp only, in sections, letting the runoff clean the lengths. Rinse. Apply deep conditioner section by section, add heat, and wait twenty to thirty minutes. Detangle properly during this step, while the hair has the most slip it will have all day. Rinse cool. Apply leave-in to damp hair, then oil, then your styling cream or gel, section by section. Style, then dry.
This is the single most valuable rearrangement. Shampoo strips the slip you need, so hair detangled at that stage catches and breaks. Conditioner and deep conditioner give you the slip; detangle then. Anyone whose wash day is a fight is usually doing it before or during the shampoo rather than after.
Not just for detangling. Sections mean the shampoo actually reaches the scalp everywhere, the deep conditioner coats every strand rather than the outer layer, and the styling product goes on evenly. Loose hair washed as one mass tangles into itself and gets uneven product coverage, which is why some parts of a style hold and others do not.
Ninety minutes to three hours for most people with textured hair, including drying time, and longer for very long or very dense hair. If yours is regularly taking five hours, the usual culprits are detangling in the wrong order, doing everything loose instead of sectioned, or using far more product than the hair can absorb.
Split it across two days: wash and deep condition one evening, style the next morning. Pre-poo and detangle while watching something rather than treating it as a task. Use a bonnet dryer to cut drying time, which is usually the longest part. Keep the product list short, since every additional product is another pass through the whole head.
Skipping the deep conditioner to save time, which makes detangling harder and styling worse. Using a fine comb. Piling hair on top of the head while washing. Applying styling products to hair that has already begun to dry. And changing three products at once, which means you never learn which step was the problem.
