Curling Wands in Metro Detroit

A wand has no clamp, so you wrap the hair around the barrel and hold it yourself. That takes more practice than a curling iron and gives a looser, more natural curl with no crease where a clamp would sit. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry them.

Barrel size and shape

Diameter decides the curl: narrow for tight springy curls, wide for loose waves. Tapered barrels, thicker at the base and narrower at the tip, give a curl that's looser at the root and tighter at the ends, which looks more natural than a uniform curl. Around an inch is the most adaptable single size.

Using one

A heat glove on the hand holding the hair, since there's no clamp between your fingers and a hot barrel. Work in small sections, wrap away from the face on both sides for a natural fall, and hold for a few seconds rather than long enough to feel heat through the glove. Leave the last inch out for a softer end.

Making curls last

Let each curl cool completely in your hand or pinned in a coil before releasing, since hair sets as it cools. Don't brush through immediately. A light hold spray after the curls have cooled holds the shape without stiffness. Fine hair holds better on day-old hair than freshly washed.

Heat and hair

Heat protectant every time, on fully dry hair, at the lowest temperature that curls in one pass. Fine, color-treated or damaged hair sits at the low end of the dial. Curls that stop reverting after washing and ends that look see-through are signs the temperature has been too high.
