What you get

Lace at the front hairline with hairs tied individually through it, so the hair appears to grow from the scalp, on a machine-made cap behind. Many now come pre-plucked and pre-cut, which removes the two customizing steps most often done badly. The style is set into the fiber, so it holds through washing without any styling time.

Where synthetic differs from human hair

It cannot take heat unless it's specifically labeled heat-friendly, and even then only at low temperatures. It cannot be colored. It has a shine that reads as artificial in bright daylight more than human hair does. In exchange, it costs far less, holds its style permanently and comes in colors that would require damaging processing on real hair.

Making it last

Wash with a shampoo made for synthetic fiber, working downward rather than scrubbing, and air dry on a stand. Never use a regular flat iron or curling iron on standard synthetic. Store on a stand or in a satin bag. Friction at the nape from collars and seat backs is what mats a synthetic unit first, so watch that area.

Customizing

If the hairline isn't pre-plucked, pluck sparingly on a mannequin head, since synthetic hair cannot be replaced once removed. Tint the lace to your skin tone before install. Cut the lace in small zigzags rather than one straight line.
