Regular, transparent and HD lace

Regular lace comes in set shades and works if one matches your scalp closely. Transparent lace is lighter and adapts across a wider range of skin tones, which makes it the practical default. HD lace is thinner again and disappears most convincingly against skin, at the cost of being noticeably more fragile both while you customize it and over time.

Lace front, 360 and full lace

A lace front has lace at the front hairline only, with a machine-made cap behind, which is the most common and most affordable construction. A 360 lace unit has lace all the way around the perimeter, so the hair can be worn up. A full lace unit is lace throughout, allowing parting anywhere, and is the most expensive and most delicate.

Pre-plucked and pre-cut

Many units now come with the hairline already plucked to a natural density and the lace pre-cut, which removes the two steps that most often go wrong. If a unit is not pre-plucked, the hairline will look too dense and too even out of the pack, and that is what reads as a wig.

What you need alongside it

A wig cap. Adhesive and remover if you're gluing, or the bands and combs if it's glueless. Laying gel or spray for the lace edge. Scissors for trimming, tweezers if you're plucking, and lace tint or a light foundation dusting to match the lace to your skin. A stand for storage.
