A synthetic unit's curl or straightness is set into the fiber, which means it looks the same after washing as it did out of the box with no styling time at all. For anyone who wants to put a wig on and leave the house, that is the single biggest practical advantage over human hair.

The limits

No heat unless the pack says heat-friendly, and even then at low temperatures only. No coloring. And a shine that can read as artificial in bright daylight, though better quality fibers have narrowed that gap considerably. If you want to restyle, color or blend closely with your own hair, human hair is the honest answer.

This is where synthetic is genuinely the better product rather than the cheaper one. Bright and pastel colors, ombres and unusual finishes come ready-made without any of the processing that lifting real hair to those shades would require, and without the damage.

Care

Wash every eight to ten wears with a shampoo made for synthetic fiber, stroking downward rather than piling or scrubbing. Air dry on a stand. Store on a stand or in a satin bag. Watch the nape, where friction against collars and seat backs mats a unit first, and use a wig brush rather than a regular one.
