Mascara is the product most people replace most often, and the formula matters more than the brand for what it does to your lashes. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry the range alongside eyeliner and brow products.

Lengthening, volumizing or both

Lengthening formulas have finer brushes and thinner product, which suits short lashes and gives definition without weight. Volumizing formulas are thicker with denser brushes, which builds fast on sparse lashes and clumps if overloaded. Combination formulas do a reasonable job of both and are the safe default.

Waterproof, and the cost of it

Waterproof mascara holds a curl and survives a long day, and it's harder to remove, which means more rubbing at the lash line. That rubbing pulls lashes out over time. Keep waterproof for occasions and buy a dedicated remover with it rather than scrubbing.

Getting more from the same tube

Wipe the wand rather than pumping it, since pumping forces air in and dries the formula out. Wiggle at the root and sweep upward rather than dragging straight through. Curl before mascara, never after. A tube lasts about three months once opened, after which it dries and carries bacteria.

With strip lashes

Apply mascara to your own lashes before putting strips on, and avoid putting mascara on the strip itself, which shortens its life considerably and makes cleaning the band harder. A thin line of liner over the band hides the join.
