Eyeliner in Metro Detroit

Eyeliner is where small differences in formula show up most, since everything is applied within a couple of millimeters of a moving, watering surface. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry pencil, gel and liquid formulas alongside the rest of the cosmetics.

Pencil, gel or liquid

A pencil is the forgiving option, easy to control and the only one designed to be smudged. Gel sits between: strong pigment, immovable once set, but it wants a brush and practice. Liquid gives the crispest line of the three and shows every tremor, which is why it suits a steady hand and a slow morning.

Lash line and waterline

Liner pushed into the roots of the upper lash line makes lashes look denser without reading as makeup. Liner on the lower waterline closes the eye and makes it look smaller, which may or may not be the effect you want. A nude or white pencil on the lower waterline opens it instead.

Making it stay

Oily lids are the usual reason liner transfers or fades. A primer or a dusting of powder on the lid before liner gives it something to hold. Waterproof and long-wear formulas last longest and need a dedicated remover, which is worth buying at the same time rather than scrubbing at your eye.

With lashes

Apply liner before strip lashes rather than after, then use a thin line over the band once the lashes are on to hide any gap between the band and your lash line. That gap is the most common reason strip lashes look obvious.
