The base, which is worth getting right

Foundation or tinted moisturizer matched to your jaw and neck in daylight, and a concealer one shade lighter for under the eyes. A setting powder to stop them moving. These three do the most work and are the ones where shade accuracy matters, so they're worth the time at the counter rather than a quick grab.

The pieces that add definition

A brow product one shade lighter than your hair, a mascara, and a blush. That's enough to look finished. Bronzer and highlighter come next if you want them, but a face with a matched base, defined brows and a little color is complete without them.

Lips and eyes

One neutral lip that suits everything and one bolder shade covers most occasions, with a liner that matches the neutral. For eyes, a small neutral palette with a matte mid-tone and a darker shade for the crease does more than a large colorful one. Eyeliner in black or brown, in the format you're most comfortable applying.

Tools

A sponge or brush for the base, a fluffy brush for powder, an angled brush for brows, and one blending brush for the eyes. Four tools cover the kit above. Brushes last for years if washed, and washing them monthly matters more for your skin than the price of the brush.

Our Detroit store is at 15221 Houston Whittier St, just off Gratiot near 7 Mile on the east side, and it's the one that handles every online pickup order. It opens at 8:45 AM every day but Sunday, with the latest closing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8:15 PM. Coming from downtown or Midtown, Gratiot runs straight there; from the west side, 7 Mile or Davison to Conner is the quickest way over.
