Combs and Brushes in Metro Detroit

Owning one brush and using it for everything is why detangling hurts and styling takes longer than it should. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry the full range, and the tools are cheap enough that having the right three beats having one expensive one.

Detangling

A wide-tooth comb is the only thing that should meet wet or tangled hair first, worked from the ends upward with conditioner in the hair. Fine-tooth combs on tangles pull hair out rather than freeing it. Check the teeth of a cheap comb for a molding seam, which is a ridge left in manufacturing that tears hair as it passes.

Styling and sectioning

A rat-tail comb for parting, cornrow sections and lifting hairs at the hairline. A pick or afro comb to lift and shape textured hair without flattening it. An edge brush, firm bristles one side and a comb or tail the other, for laying the hairline.

Brushes by job

A paddle brush smooths long dry hair. A round brush creates tension and shape during a blow-dry. A denman-style brush with rows of pins defines curl clumps. A boar-bristle brush distributes natural oil and smooths, which works best on straighter textures. A soft cushion brush suits fine hair and children.

Looking after them

Pull the shed hair out after each use and wash combs and brushes every few weeks with warm water and a little shampoo, since product builds up on them and transfers back to clean hair. Replace anything with broken or rough teeth rather than working around it.
