Hair Clips, Pins and Bands in Metro Detroit

The small hardware is what runs out halfway through a style. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry clips, pins, bands and barrettes in bulk packs as well as small ones, which is the right way to buy things that get lost rather than worn out.

Sectioning clips

Duckbill and butterfly clips both hold sections out of the way, and they fail in different ways. Metal duckbills take the biggest sections and grip hardest, at the cost of leaving a crease if left in too long. Plastic butterflies are kinder to the hair and lose their hold on anything dense.

Bobby pins and hair pins

Bobby pins grip better with the ridged side against the scalp, which most people have backwards. U-shaped hair pins hold buns and updos with less tension and come out without pulling. Color-matched pins disappear far better than plain black on lighter hair.

Bands and elastics

Small rubber bands secure braid ends, ponytail sections and the base of a crochet install, and they're consumables, so bulk bags cost less than small packs. Coated or fabric-covered elastics are gentler on hair and better for anything worn daily, since bare rubber cuts into hair over time.

Barrettes and beads

Stocked in bulk for kids' styles, along with bead threaders that speed the job considerably. Secure beads with a small elastic below rather than a knot, which has to be cut out.
