Sectioning clips and what to look for

Clips are judged on grip and on whether they leave a dent in the hair. Metal duckbills take the largest sections and hold them; plastic butterflies are gentler on the hair and lose their grip on anything thick. Check the teeth for rough edges before buying, since a burr catches every time.

Rubber bands and elastics

Small rubber bands are used for securing braid ends, ponytail sections and the base of a crochet install. They are consumables and they snap, so buying a bulk bag is cheaper than small packs. Coated or fabric-covered elastics are gentler on the hair itself and better for anything worn daily, since bare rubber cuts into hair over time.

Bobby pins and hair pins

Bobby pins with the ridged side facing the scalp grip better, which is the small detail most people have backwards. Hair pins, the U-shaped ones, hold buns and updos with less tension than bobby pins and are easier to remove without pulling. Color-matched pins disappear far better than plain black on light hair.

Barrettes and beads for kids

Beads and barrettes are stocked in bulk packs, which is what you want when a style takes dozens. A bead threader or elastic loop makes putting them on considerably faster than threading by hand. Secure beads with a small elastic or a rubber band below rather than a knot in the hair, which is difficult to remove without cutting.

It's open until 9 PM Monday through Saturday and 6:30 PM on Sunday, which makes it the usual evening stop for Warren, Center Line, Sterling Heights and the Oakland County suburbs off I-696.
