Combs and Brushes: Which One for Which Job

Detangling tools

A wide-tooth comb is the only thing that should touch wet, tangled or textured hair first. Its teeth are far enough apart to separate without ripping. Work from the ends upward in sections, with conditioner or detangler in the hair. A fine-tooth comb on tangles pulls hair out rather than freeing it, which is where most breakage during wash day comes from.

Styling and sectioning

A rat-tail comb, with a long pointed handle, is for parting: straight lines for braids, cornrow sections, and lifting individual hairs at the hairline. A pick or afro comb lifts and shapes textured hair without flattening the volume. Neither is a detangling tool.

Brushes and what they do

A paddle brush smooths long hair and is used on dry or nearly dry hair. A round brush is for blow-drying, creating tension and shape as the air hits. A denman-style brush with rows of pins defines curl clumps and distributes product through curly hair. A boar-bristle brush smooths and distributes natural oil, best on straighter textures.

Edge and small brushes

A dual-sided edge brush lays the hairline, firm bristles on one side and a comb or tail on the other. A soft cushion brush is for babies and fine hair. A cleaning brush for tools, particularly clippers, lives in the electric aisle rather than here.
