Wispy is the most useful word on the lash wall and the least explained. It means the lash has varied lengths across the strip with deliberate gaps between the clusters, so light passes through it and the shape reads as feathery rather than solid. That single quality is what separates a lash you can wear to work from one that announces itself across a room.
Look at the strip end on. A uniform lash has fibers of one length packed evenly along the band, giving a dense curtain. A wispy lash alternates short and long fibers in small clusters with visible space between them, which is much closer to how real lashes grow. The gaps are the point. A lash described as wispy that looks like a solid black line in the pack is not one.
Almost everyone, which is why they dominate the everyday end of the wall. They are particularly good on sparse natural lashes, where a dense strip looks pasted on because there is nothing of your own to blend into it, and on hooded eyes, where a heavy uniform lash closes the eye down visually while a wispy one keeps it open. They also photograph well without looking heavy in person, which the denser styles cannot manage.
The band is the strip the fibers sit on, and it matters more than the fibers for comfort. A thin, flexible band curves with your lash line and disappears; a thick stiff band fights the shape of your eye and lifts at the corners by the afternoon. Clear or invisible bands suit anyone not wearing eyeliner. Black bands read as liner in themselves, which saves a step but commits you to the look. For everyday wear, thin and flexible is worth paying a little more for.
Almost no lash fits straight out of the pack. Hold the strip against your lash line and see where it ends against your outer corner; if it overhangs, trim from the outer end, never the inner, because the fibers are shortest at the inner corner and cutting there ruins the taper. Trim a small amount at a time and check the fit again. A lash that fits properly is the single biggest factor in whether it stays down all day.
Wispy lashes reuse well because the fibers are not densely packed and hold their shape. Peel the dried glue off the band carefully with tweezers after each wear rather than pulling at the fibers, and store them back in the tray they came in so the curve is preserved. Kept clean, a good pair goes many wears; kept in a drawer with glue still on the band, it goes two.
