Wig Caps, Adhesives and Laying Products

The unit is half the purchase. What holds it on, protects the hair underneath and blends the hairline is the other half, and all four Kelly Beauty stores carry it beside the wig wall.

Wig caps

A cap goes between your hair and the unit, protecting your hair and giving the combs something to grip. Mesh and stocking caps are the common types, and a cap in a shade near your scalp is less visible under a lace front than a black one. Under any unit, flat hair underneath matters more than the cap itself: cornrows or flat twists for longer hair, gel-slicked for short.

Adhesives

Liquid glues and adhesive tapes both work, and both should be patch-tested on the inner arm before going near your hairline. Apply glue in thin layers and let each go tacky rather than putting one thick layer down, since thick adhesive oozes through the lace and shows. Buy the remover at the same time, because removing a unit without it is what tears lace and hairlines.

Laying gels and sprays

These hold the lace flat against the skin and are stronger than the edge control meant for your own hairline. Brushed along the lace and tied down with a satin scarf for fifteen minutes, they melt the join. They're the right tool for lace and the wrong one for daily use on your own edges.

For glueless units

No adhesive needed. The cap holds with adjustable straps, sewn-in combs and often an elastic band. Move the combs slightly between wears rather than pressing them into the same spot every time, and don't overtighten the straps, which is what causes tension at the nape.
