Measure before you buy

Three measurements matter: around the head at the hairline, front to nape over the crown, and ear to ear across the top. Most units are sold as average, with small and large available. A cap that's too big slides no matter how tight you pull the straps; one that's too small gives you a headache and lifts at the nape by the afternoon.

Prepare your own hair underneath

Flat is the goal. Cornrows or flat twists give the smoothest base and the most comfortable wear for long stretches. Short hair can be brushed back with a little gel. Then a wig cap over the top, which protects your hair and gives the combs something to grip. A lumpy base shows through as bumps and pushes the wig out of position.

Straps, combs and bands in order

Adjust the nape straps first so the cap sits snug without pressing. Then place the front where your own hairline sits and press the front comb in. Then the side combs, angled downward into the hair rather than straight in, which is what stops them working loose. If there's an elastic band, it sits behind the ears against the wig cap.
