Installing a Lace Front Wig

A lace front install has a handful of steps, and doing them in the right order with the right amount of product is what separates a convincing result from an obvious one. Super Kelly Beauty on Gratiot near 8 Mile stocks the units, adhesives, laying products and removers together.

Prepare your own hair first

Flatten everything: cornrows or flat twists for longer hair, gel-slicked for short. Then a wig cap. Bumps under the cap push the unit out of position and show through the crown. Clean the skin along the hairline with alcohol or a gentle astringent so the adhesive has a dry, oil-free surface to grip.

Customize before you glue

Cut the lace to shape, trimming in small zigzags rather than one straight line. Pluck the hairline if it isn't pre-plucked, a little at a time. Tint the lace to your skin tone if needed. All of this is far easier on a mannequin head and nearly impossible to correct once the unit is stuck down.

Adhesive, in thin layers

Apply a thin layer to the skin along the hairline, let it go tacky rather than wet, and add a second thin layer if you want longer hold. Thick adhesive does not hold better; it oozes through the lace and shows. Press the lace down with a damp cloth or the back of a comb rather than fingers, working from the center outward.

Laying the edge

Once the lace is down, laying gel or spray along the hairline, brushed with an edge brush and tied down with a satin scarf for fifteen minutes, is what melts the join. A little concealer or foundation over the lace blends any remaining line. Patch-test any adhesive on your inner arm before the first use.
