Tape-In Extensions: What to Know

Tape-ins are thin wefts with an adhesive strip along the top, sandwiched in pairs around a fine slice of your own hair so the join lies flat against the head. They are the flattest semi-permanent method there is, which is why they suit fine hair, and they are also the method least suited to doing yourself. Worth understanding properly before committing.

How they actually work

Each tab is roughly an inch wide. Your hair is sectioned into very thin, even slices, and one tab goes underneath a slice while a second goes on top, bonding to the first with your hair sealed between them. A full head takes forty tabs or more, placed in rows that have to stay clear of the parting and the hairline. The bond relies on hair that is clean, completely dry and free of product.

Why this is a professional job

Section too thick and the bond will not hold; too thin and a tab hangs its weight on too few strands. Place them too close to the scalp and they pull with every movement, too far and they show. Removal needs a solvent that breaks the adhesive down, applied and then given time to work. Prying a tab off takes hair with it, and that is the single biggest source of damage with this method.

Wear time and move-ups

Tabs sit for roughly six to eight weeks, by which point your hair has grown and the bonds have moved down, which is when the pulling starts. A move-up means taking each tab out, re-taping or replacing the tape, and re-applying closer to the scalp. That is an appointment every couple of months for as long as you wear them. The hair may survive several applications, but the tape is a consumable.

Who should think twice

Anyone shedding heavily, with an inflamed or flaky scalp, or with breakage already along the hairline should deal with that first, because tape-ins put steady tension on small sections. Very oily hair breaks the bond down faster, and oil-based conditioners or scalp treatments cannot go near the tabs. If you swim often or train hard every day, expect a shorter wear time than the estimate you are given.

Cheaper things to try first

If the appeal is length for an occasion rather than every day, clip-ins and drawstring pieces give you most of the effect with none of the commitment, and all four of our stores keep both in stock next to the bundles. They come out at night, cost a fraction of a tape-in installation, and cannot damage hair they are not pulling on. If you still want tape-ins, go to a stylist who fits them regularly.
