Clip-In Extensions: Placement and Care

A clip-in set lives or dies on placement. The same wefts can look like hair or look like rows of hardware depending on how high they sit, how much of your own hair falls over them, and whether the weight is spread out. None of it needs a stylist, but it does need sectioning properly instead of clipping pieces in by feel.

Where the rows go

Work in horizontal sections from the nape upward. The widest weft goes lowest, roughly level with the tops of the ears, then another a couple of inches above it, then narrower wefts higher still. Keep every row at least an inch below your parting and an inch in from the hairline on each side, since the edges are where a weft shows. Two or three well-placed rows usually beat a whole set crammed in.

Clipping so they hold and hide

Lightly tease a narrow strip of hair where each clip will sit, or mist it with a little hairspray, so the clip has some texture to grip. Open the clip, press it down against the scalp and snap it closed with the teeth facing inward. Then drop your own hair over the row and check in a mirror with the light behind you, which reveals a visible weft much faster than front lighting does.

What daily wear costs

The clips sit in the same few inches of hair every time, and the weight pulls on exactly those strands. Worn every day in one position, that produces tension and breakage along the clip lines. Shift the rows slightly between wears, take the set out before sleeping, and give your hair days with nothing in it. Never clip over a tight ponytail base, or into wet hair, which stretches and snaps.

Washing and brushing a set

Clip-ins need washing far less often than your own hair, since they never meet your scalp oil. Wash when product builds up or the hair feels coated: cool water, gentle shampoo stroked down the weft rather than scrubbed in, conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends only, then dry flat in the air. Brush from the ends up while holding the weft above where you are working, so you are not dragging against the stitching.

Storing them between wears

Unclip every clip before putting a set away, because a closed clip left gripping the next weft leaves a permanent bend. Brush the hair smooth, lay the wefts flat in a box or hang them over a hanger with the clips fastened to the bar, and keep them out of a hot car and away from damp. Crushed, tangled storage is the usual reason a set looks old long before the hair has worn out.
