Deeper skin burns less easily, and that fact has been stretched into a belief that it does not need sunscreen. It does, for reasons that have nothing to do with burning. The obstacle has always been that many sunscreens leave a gray or purple cast on brown skin, and that problem now has real solutions.
Melanin gives some protection, roughly equivalent to a low SPF, and not enough to prevent UV damage. UV darkens existing marks and hyperpigmentation and keeps them from fading, which is the most immediate reason for anyone with dark marks. It accelerates aging in every skin tone. And while skin cancer is less common in deeper skin, it is more often found late, which makes it more dangerous when it does occur. Sunscreen is a daily product for everyone.
Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which sit on the skin and reflect light, and in their plain form they are white. On deeper skin that shows as an ashy cast. Older formulas were unusable for that reason. The fixes are tinted mineral sunscreens, which add iron oxides to match skin tones and also give extra protection against visible light, and chemical sunscreens, which absorb UV and are clear on any skin. Both exist in the range now, and a sunscreen you will actually wear beats a theoretically better one you leave in the drawer.
Chemical filters absorb UV, feel lighter, and are invisible on skin. Some people find them irritating or stinging around the eyes. Mineral filters are gentler for sensitive and acne-prone skin and work immediately, but need a tint to avoid the cast. Neither is better across the board. Try a tinted mineral if your skin is reactive, a chemical formula if you want something weightless.
Broad spectrum, which covers both UVA and UVB. SPF 30 at minimum. For daily use, a formula light enough to wear under makeup or alone without feeling like a layer. Apply enough, which is more than most people use, and reapply if you are outside for hours. Sunscreen under makeup, or a tinted one in place of foundation on a light day, is the routine that actually gets followed.
If you are treating hyperpigmentation, sunscreen is not a supporting step, it is the main one. Every fading ingredient works slowly and every unprotected day sets it back. Iron-oxide tinted formulas add visible-light protection, which matters for pigmentation in deeper skin specifically.
